Organized Chaos, a Promise, and a Little Inspiration
I have a pet peeve to share with you. It drives me absolutely batty when someone rants on about how busy they are. “Ohh, I’m just sooo busy,” they say. It’s annoying. Plus, it’s kind of rude because it’s usually in response to a social invitation or a simple question like, “How’s your day going?” We know your busy. We’re all busy.
Yet we all do it. I’m guilty of it and I’m about to do it right now…
I quit my corporate job to follow my passions, to build a brand of my own, and to eventually have my own business. In the meantime I’ve been presented with some really fantastic opportunities to work with some amazing people and companies. Plus, I still have to do whatever it takes to pay my bills. So, you know where that puts me? You guessed it… Soooo busy.
I apologize but it’s true. I’m not bitching about being busy though because it is completely my choice. I love it. My Dad always says to me that I thrive on chaos and boy is he right. Not bad chaos, but organized chaos. I’m staying busy by working hard, learning new skills, meeting new people, doing the things that I want to do, and still traveling as much as I can. In short, I’m really happy right now but I’ve unintentionally put my blog on the back burner.
They say (someone somewhere) that what we make a priority is our priority. I don’t want to believe that though because this blog has been such a huge part of my journey the past 8 months that I hate to admit I haven’t made it a priority over the past month or so and I’ve been slacking on the posting. However, I can tell you that it is in fact a huge priority but sometimes we do just get busy.
And that’s okay in my book.
I have to spend my free time working on the freelance projects I’ve committed myself to and I still have to drink wine on the couch with my husband every now and then. So, yes, I’m busy as hell. I’m working every single day of the week but I am enjoying the heck out of these new experiences and opportunities. In the past I had to create the chaos outside of my 9 to 5 via new projects, hobbies, or social plans, but now I actually have a plethora of fulfilling, organized chaos to keep me busy as a bee. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
My promise to you (and especially to myself) is that I will continue posting and making SimplyDo Creative a priority. First off, because it is a priority and I know where I want to take this eventually and second, because I like to believe that some people out there actually enjoy reading what I have to say.
With all that being said… I’d like to share a video that I absolutely love. It makes me cry and smile and want to do big things. Like really big things. So, hopefully you like it too and it makes you want to do big things. Because at the end of the day we are all capable of big, amazing, life-changing experiences and ideas so watch this video then go do some stuff!
By the way, special thanks to Scott Dinsmore at Live Your Legend for posting this video again. It’s a good one!! And take a second and check out his website, it’s pretty darn awesome if I may say so myself.
or equally frustrating, when someone says, “I don’t have as much TIME as you do.” Really? You don’t have the same 24 hours? Or is it that you simply choose different priorities than I do? It’s mostly annoying because it implies that their stuff is so much more “important” than to do things like work out, or clean their house or whatever. I work hard, but I also schedule time for other “priorities” as well…like you said, I am very busy.
I could not agree more. We all just need to accept that we are as busy as we want to be and it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to not do what’s most important to us or to be a bad friend or whatever. This is fantastic article that kind of sums up my feelings on the whole thing: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/30/the-busy-trap/
Love this video! I have it saved so it is there when I need a little boost — today it was needed so thank you for the reminder.
I totally agree with you pet peeve but also have found myself using the phrase. I’ve been trying to be more specific in my language saying “Sorry I’m already committed for that time” or “I can’t make the time right now” (though if I were more honest I would say I “won’t” make the time). I think the first thing though is to realize that it is a question of priorities — like you said, blanket “busy” shouldn’t be an excuse. While the blog or your creative life might take priority in your heart, fiscal or other concerns are taking priority right now. That is totally cool as long as you are being honest about it.
Keep fighting the good fight against the clock! Be busy and love it
Thanks lady – that is great advice. I do love it as much as it makes me a little crazy at times. I’d pick busy over bored any day!
My pet peeve is whining and complaining about being busy at work. At this day and age of unemployment and the state of the economy I am thankful simply to be employed and not forced to feed off of others’ hard work. So, stay positive and keep soaring. You’re doing great!
Thanks so much – I appreciate you stopping by and for your words!
I planned on reading the whole blog, I was just wayyyy too busy! Lol, love it!
Ohhh Howard, you are so supportive.
But thanks for stopping by and checking it out!
